WAMU.org is the website for Washington, DC’s NPR affiliate radio station. This non-profit station is owned by American University, however, all station Web sites are independent of the university’s IT staff. In 2011, the site was rebuilt using Drupal 7 and imported content from a proprietary CMS. Additionally, the station maintains several other Web sites for their shows using a mix of Drupal and WordPress CMS solutions. Some of these are listed below:
Description of Responsibilities
Starting in 2011, as the Senior Developer, I reported to the Director of Digital Media. My partner was the Online Content Managing Editor and our teams were primarily responsible for wamu.org. We also provided support for the station's other Web sites and social network pages.
I was the sole Web developer responsible for building the implementation and customization of this site. This required establishing technical requirements, researching existing modules and new core Drupal 7 functionality as well as the creation of custom modules as needed. I handled all front-end development based on the graphic mockups as well as all back-end development. In addition, show transcripts and NPR provided content is imported into the site throughout the day using a customized implementation of the feeds importer.
Reporting to the Director of Digital Media, I initially hired and managed a UI designer. After the site was launched to beta, I was able to hire another developer to continue working on site enhancements and maintenance. I also performed extensive system administration duties as needed managing our multiple VPS systems.
